For large brand owners like Orkla, packaging plays a central role in balancing design, functionality, and meeting sustainability targets. When Orkla Eesti upgraded its filling technology, the company saw the opportunity to not only adapt its existing packaging, but to take it to the next level. For many years, Greiner Packaging had been supplying smoothie bottles made of polypropylene (PP). With a new filling setup in place, Orkla reassessed its packaging approach and decided to switch to a PET-based solution. The result is a redesigned smoothie bottle that launched just in time for the summer season, when consumers increasingly seek refreshing and convenient beverages on the go.

Why Orkla moved from PP Bottles to r-PET Bottles

Orkla Eesti is part of the globally active Orkla Group, operating across multiple business areas including food, home care and personal care. When Orkla Eesti upgraded its filling technology last year, this created a strategic opportunity to reassess the packaging solution and unlock additional value. The transition from PP to PET marked a significant step forward. For Orkla, this change enabled a more premium positioning of its product range, thanks to improved transparency and a more refined appearance of the plastic bottle. At the same time, PET opened the door to integrating recycled content, an increasingly important requirement for brand owners aiming to meet internal sustainability targets and evolving regulatory frameworks.

“Switching to r-PET bottles enables us to align our packaging with both our sustainability targets and future regulatory requirements, while at the same time strengthening the visual impact of our products at the point of sale.”

Annika Oja, Marketing Director at Orkla Eesti

By introducing r-PET bottles with 30% recycled content, Orkla can now actively reduce its reliance on virgin material while maintaining product performance and visual quality. In addition, the updated sleeve design, with transparent see-through windows, allows the product itself to become part of the visual communication, supporting a more authentic and high-quality brand perception.

Unlocking new potential with r-PET Bottles

The redesigned smoothie bottle is used for Orkla’s brand “Pai,” which primarily targets young adults with a focus on convenient, energy-providing products. Available in a variety of popular flavors, including Mango-Coconut, Blueberry-Blackcurrant, Strawberry-Banana, and many more, the product range combines appealing taste with on-the-go convenience. The new bottle range, launched in June, includes two sizes: 250 ml for immediate consumption and 750 ml for larger usage occasions.

The solution is designed to be scalable, enabling Orkla to respond to changing market demands while maintaining a consistent packaging concept. Currently, the smoothie bottles are available in Estonia.

Extending the collaboration for shampoo bottles

The successful implementation of the new smoothie bottle highlights the value of long-term collaboration. Greiner Packaging and Orkla have been working together for many years, continuously developing packaging solutions that meet evolving requirements. Looking ahead, this partnership is expanding beyond beverage packaging. Together with Orkla Care in Sweden, Greiner Packaging is currently developing shampoo bottle concepts in three different sizes, also incorporating post-consumer recycled material. This underlines a shared commitment to driving circular solutions across product categories.

“Our long-term partnership with Orkla allows us to continuously develop packaging solutions that support their business goals, from integrating recycled content in r-PET bottles to exploring new applications in personal care. Together, we are creating solutions that are both market-driven and future-ready.”
