From Glass and Paper Cups to K3®: How Canadian Dairy Simpla Foods found their right Yogurt Packaging

When Simpla Foods started making plant-based yogurt, the mission was clear: create a simple, organic, dairy-free coconut yogurt that consumers could feel good about eating every day. What seemed less simple was packaging. From glass jars to paper cups, the brand tested different options in search of the most sustainable solution for the Canadian market, without compromising on quality or shelf life. Today, Simpla Foods’ coconut yogurts are sold across Canada in Greiner Packaging’s K3® cardboard-plastic cups, bringing together reduced plastic use, product protection, and increased recyclability for the white plastic cup.

A Clear Vision: Simple, Plant-Based Yogurt Made in Canada

Headquartered in Hockley Valley near Toronto, Canada, Simpla focuses on making the best yogurt in Canada, crafted for people who want dairy-free probiotic yogurt made with integrity. The name “Simpla” reflects the company’s philosophy: creating simple, healthy products made from organic, plant-based ingredients.

The brand initially introduced its yogurt to their families and then to local stores in Ontario and officially entered commercial distribution in 2020. Today, Simpla offers dairy-free and low-sugar coconut yogurts in four flavors: Raspberry, Original, Vanilla and Lemon across Canada. With a strong commitment to quality and transparency, Simpla quickly built a loyal customer base. As demand increased, however, the company realized that its packaging choices would be just as important as the product itself.

The Search for Sustainable Packaging: From Glass to K3®

At first, Simpla believed glass would be the most sustainable option. While glass conveyed purity and premium quality, it soon presented major challenges for Simpla:

  • Heavy and not stackable
  • Transported on large pallets wrapped in even more plastic than usual
  • Created an unexpectedly large carbon footprint

These limitations pushed them to search for a more practical, scalable and sustainable packaging solution that aligns with Simpla’s sustainability goals. In search of improvement, Simpla switched their packaging to paper cups with LDPE coating, successfully reducing plastic use. However, the team soon learned that not all Canadian recycling facilities could recycle these cups, limiting Simpla’s environmental benefits again.

“We learned that sustainability is much more complex than choosing one material over another. It’s about the entire lifecycle, from production and transport to recycling."

Ari Davis, founder of Simpla Foods

Determined to find a better alternative, the dairy producer turned to Greiner Packaging’s K3® cardboard-plastic cup, the first solution that met Simpla’s sustainability goals:

  • Reduced plastic content thanks to ultra‑thin plastic walls supported by a sturdy cardboard wrap
  • Excellent shelf life and product protection
  • Better recyclability in Canada, where clear plastic and easily separable components perform best in recycling systems, an ideal fit for the K3® cup, whose tear‑tab system enables effortless separation of the cardboard wrap and plastic cup, making proper separation easier for consumers.
  • Improved logistics due to reduced weight and efficient stackability

With K3®, Simpla found a packaging solution that truly balanced sustainability, functionality, and logistics.

Driving Innovation Through Partnership

For around four months, Simpla’s yogurt has been on the shelf in Greiner Packaging’s K3® cups. The transition from paper cups to Greiner’s K3® cups has been seamless and production, logistics, and product protection are running smoothly.

“Partnering with Simpla Foods has been a great example of how innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand. With the K3® solution, we are supporting their growth while helping them reduce material use and enhance recyclability.”

Kai Anthony, Sales Manager at Greiner Packaging

Simpla’s goal remains unchanged: to produce the best yogurt in Canada using the highest-quality ingredients and efficient supply chains while growing in a sustainable way. Looking ahead, the company continues to focus on innovation and intentional growth. While the original Coconut Yogurt remains the most popular product, new flavors and concepts are already in development.
