This year, Greiner Packaging’s Odžaci location took part in the “28th of April Charter Award“, a Serbian National Award in the Health and Safety at Work category for companies with below 250 employees. Despite stiff competition, the team was able to impressively present the company’s improvements and results in this area. The jury named Greiner Packaging Odžaci as the runner-up.

The safety of our employees is a top priority in our day-to-day work. We work hard to implement a safety culture at our plant, and I see this award as recognition of our activities and our strong commitment to this issue.  Our vision remains the same as before. As well as simply operating our plant, we want to achieve world-class safety standards with zero lost time due to accidents and we want our employees to work together safely day after day – even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Full set of health and safety requirements implemented

Greiner Packaging Odžaci did not have a single nonconformity in terms of legal requirements. In addition, the occupational health and safety management at the firm satisfied the jury’s requirements. “Safety first” is the principle that has been adopted here – and this is not limited to a single person but viewed as the responsibility of every individual and deemed a top priority. Thanks to specific interventions, for example, zero cut injuries occurred in the last quarter of 2019 and 2020 up to date. Safety instructions across the company were also introduced – for example, in the form of marked pedestrian and forklift pathways in the plant and on the shop floors, as well as markings for hydrants and fuse boxes, to name just a few activities. A reporting system for all risk situations, risk assessments, and safety management completes the package of measures taken. This also includes audit training sessions for the management team to ensure that the safety standards and production environment are constantly monitored, and a high level of safety is ensured.

International safety standards met

All the safety standards at Greiner Packaging Odžaci meet both European requirements and the organization’s own rules. These were also adjusted in line with the company’s existing culture and methods. Additional investments were made in fire safety (hydrant and fire alarm systems). Furthermore, old forklifts that no longer met the relevant safety standards were replaced by new models with even better ergonomic qualities. And finally, as an example of best practice, Greiner Packaging showed how the Odžaci operation analyzes near-accidents and LTAs, how it communicates important safety information, and how it switched to safety blades made by a specialist producer. By taking all these steps, Greiner Packaging successfully convinced the National Award jury.
