MBT - multi barrier technology

Modern consumers are increasingly making greater demands when it comes to product shelf life. At the same time, however, they want to avoid food preservatives.  Barrier packaging offers the right solution for precisely these requirements.

In multi barrier technology (MBT), a barrier layer (e.g., EVOH) is embedded in a standard plastic and forms an increased oxygen barrier, thereby protecting the filling from external influences. Products created using Kavoblow technology can be provided with increased barrier properties. When multi barrier technology (MBT) is used, a barrier layer made of EVOH can be introduced into a standard plastic during production of the preforms. This procedure gives the packaging a higher oxygen barrier, thereby protecting the filling from external influences and extending its shelf life, without adding any preservatives.

The high process reliability and the fully closed barrier layer guaranteed as a result are a special feature of this innovative technology. MBT allows production of highly transparent barrier packaging that can also be hot-filled – a unique combination that only Greiner Packaging can offer its customers.

This technology provides thermoformed cups and bowls with barrier properties. To ensure the best product quality, we choose the best materials and additives to extrude the 7-layer foil EVOH is the layer crucial for the production process. It guarantees a higher oxygen barrier that protects the filling of the packaging from external effects; hence keeping the product inside fresh for a longer period of time, without adding preservatives. MBT + Thermoforming suitable for hot and cold filling, for sterilization and pasteurization. This technology is primarily used for large volumes.

Shaping and decoration in injection molding is done with in-mold-labeling in just one work step. Combined with MBT, labels can also be enhanced with barrier properties. The barrier label is composed of the three PP/EVOH/PP layers and can be adjusted individually, based on the requirements of the customer. No special investment is necessary for this packaging technology; it can be implemented quickly and simply.
