Tritan – light, shatterproof, and crystal clear

 

Light, shatterproof, and crystal clear – bottles and food packaging made of plastic are enjoying great popularity among consumers worldwide because of their diverse and practical uses. Because of the public discussion surrounding the chemical BPA, which is often used for plastic production, Greiner Packaging has not been using any polycarbonates since 2014 for the production of packaging in the food sector, instead using only the BPA-free raw material Tritan™. We have been successfully using this material for many years for reusable drinking bottles or jars.

Tritan™ copolyester is manufactured by the US company Eastman, and is approved by the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) and listed by the EFSA (European Food and Safety Association). This plastic is not just plasticizer-free but also has a number of other advantages that make it a popular substitute material for glass.

Advantages of Tritan™

Glass breakage is a common problem in production that causes production standstill and represents an increased safety risk. Glass fragments can reach the product and can injure employees. Like other plastics, Tritan™ is stable and not as fragile as glass. 

Tritan™ is transparent so the content can be recognized at first glance. Previous plastics that were hot-filled were for the most part non-transparent or were only translucent. 

Products made of Tritan™ can be filled with liquids up to 85 °C. The combination of this plus transparency gives rise to many possibilities for recreating existing packaging. For instance, TritanTM is ideal for applications with hot-filled products, e.g., sauces.

Tritan™ is dishwasher-safe up to 80 °C and approximately 80 wash cycles are possible. Bottles and containers are easy to clean and can therefore be reused often. 

Practically all design concepts and shapes are viable using Tritan™. With few restrictions, round as well non-round, angular, tapered, oval or 8-cornered shapes are possible. There are also no limits to the diversity of decorations: Tritan™ is perfectly adapted to printing (we print with up to six colors) and to labeling. And even the material itself can be dyed in different colors. 

 

 

 

Compared to glass, plastic containers are much lighter; that makes them practical for consumers, saves on transportation costs, and is consequently better for the environment.  

Packaging made of Tritan™ does not negatively affect the filling material because it is tasteless and odorless. 

Tritan™ is an extremely valuable material that is suitable not only for disposable packaging but above all, also for reusable packaging. Tritan™ is dishwasher-safe and is very easy to clean and refill. Unnecessary waste is avoided through reusable containers. The application possibilities range here from reusable bottles to milk bottles to yogurt packaging.

Studies show that the hormonal system of humans and animals can be affected by BPA. More and more countries worldwide therefore prohibit the use of BPA for food packaging or baby products. 

This means that raw materials that do not require the use of BPA were used for the production of these products. We rely on the raw material Tritan™, which is odorless and tasteless, and does not release any substances into the filling material, such as the water in a water bottle.
